Termites
What are termites?
Termites are highly-destructive insects that consume cellulose-based plant materials, including wood. Their feeding habit can be very destructive to a property, particularly when an infestation is left untreated.
How do you identify termites?
Termites are sometimes confused with flying ants. The most common indicator found that signals a possible termite infestation is soft wood, mud tubes in the interior or exterior of your home and darkening of wood structures. When a colony of termites has matured, winged termites, they are often seen near windows and doors because they are attracted to sources of light. Particularly active in the spring, they can form new breeding sites and create new colonies spreading infestations throughout a property.
How much damage can termites cause?
It’s almost inevitable that your home will at some point have termites. And, these pests will work around the clock damaging wood in your home. Each year, termites cause more than $5 billion in damage.
Can I prevent termites?
In some cases you can. Some termite varieties prefer moist areas near the foundation of your home like gutters and downspouts. Reducing sitting water and moisture in these areas may deter termites. As well, it’s a good idea to prune shrubs, vines and other vegetation away from vents, as well as remove old planks, boards, stakes, and tree stumps.
Does my homeowner’s insurance policy cover termite damage?
Hard to say, each policy can be different, this may be a better question to ask of your insurance provider.
How do you control termites?
At Ailing House Pest Management, Inc. we can identify locations within your home where there are termites and effectively treat them to prevent them from returning.
